Natural
Approach to Healthy Aging
By the year 2020, it
is estimated that 20-30% of the US population will
be age 65 or older. While some people still
hopelessly look for the anti-aging miracle fixes,
others prefer a more natural approach – how to age
gracefully and healthily.
My approach to promote
healthy aging includes
- diet and
nutritional tailoring,
- nutrient
enhancement to meet specific individual needs,
- exercise programs,
- stress management,
- counseling on
purposeful living,
- maintaining
hormonal endocrine balance (thyroid, adrenal,
and sex hormones – bio-identical hormone
therapies of course),
- optimizing
physiologic functions
- reducing chronic
inflammation, and
- normalizing
intercellular communication.
Aging has a lot to do
with how each individual’s genes are programmed. My
job is to educate patients on how gene expression
can be modified through diet, environmental and
lifestyle choices. Patients are assessed
comprehensively through physical history and
biochemical evaluation. I believe that healthy
aging can be achieved by the patients teaming up
with their physicians or health practitioners
identifying any factor that may accelerate their
aging process. Everyone ages differently and
believe it or not, you have total control on how you
age!
Higher rates of diseases are common in later life
but aging does not cause diseases. Most physiologic
functions do slow down as you age but often they are
the results of chronic inflammation and
environmental insult. It’s common to find
"suboptimal physiologic functioning" in older people
where things are not working at their best. Natural
therapies such as restoring proper gastrointestinal
flora, supplementing digestive enzymes to enhance
nutrient assimilation, improving the liver’s ability
to detoxify, lowering inflammatory and oxidative
stress at cellular levels with nutritional
therapies, hormone therapies to address suboptimal
thyroid and adrenal functions, etc… do have an
impact on how you feel and how you function. With
proper testing and evaluation of the body’s
physiologic functions and the appropriate
individualized treatments, you can restore your
physiological and hormonal balance in order to
improve your quality of life emotionally and
physically.After all, it
is not about how long one lives but how well he/she
lives it. |
